Jazz Heritage Film Festival (February 5-7) highlights month
Plus: Bi-weekly film screenings, new exhibits and lecture series

(San Francisco - Tuesday, January 27th) --- The JazzHeritageCenter (JHC), San Francisco's only permanent complex dedicated to jazz culture, art and history, announced today its programming for February/Black History Month.Highlighting the month is a three-day Jazz Heritage Film Festival led by noted jazz film historian and Carlos Santana Band percussionist, Hal Miller.
In addition to the Jazz Heritage Film Festival, the JHC announced twice-weekly film screenings (Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 7:30PM) in the JHC Media and Education Center (adjacent to Yoshi's Jazz Club); a new group art exhibit in the JHC Lush Life Gallery (African-American Expressions of the Soul);an exhibit of vintage and rare jazz film posters (Jammin', Jazzin' and Jivin') in the Koret Heritage Lobby; and a new lecture series on the intersection of jazz and democracy.
"The Jazz HeritageCenter is growing and thriving," said Peter Fitzsimmons, Executive Director, JazzHeritageCenter. "Black History Month offers a terrific opportunity to continue our focus on the intersection of jazz and film, and display art that is created by African-Americans or celebrates African-Americans. We hope the entire city comes to visit the JazzHeritageCenter and experiences our growing number of programs and offerings."
February's programming Includes:
Film Festival: A special Jazz Heritage Film Festival, on February 5-7, led by noted jazz film historian Hal Miller. As part of the JHC's new Jazz and Film initiative, Miller will present rare and treasured footage from one of the largest private collections of jazz film footage in the country. The festival will be comprised of four separate and distinct sessions over three days (Start times are 6PM Friday, 1PM Saturday, 7PM Saturday and 11AM on Sunday). Film Screenings: Bi-weekly "Jazz on Film" screenings in the JHC's Media and Education Center (Adjacent to Yoshi's Jazz Club). Film screenings will take place every Tuesday and Thursday @ 7:30PM throughout February. The screenings will feature some of the classic jazz films illustrated in the Jazzin' Jammin' & Jivin exhibit, including: Cabin the Sky, Stormy Weather, Hi Do Ho, St. Louis Blues, A Man Called Adam, Round Midnight, and Bird.For more information, visit: http://www.jazzheritagecenter.com/newsdetail.php?id=21
Lobby Exhibit:The JHC's current major exhibit, Jazzin', Jammin & Jivin, features 50 vintage film posters which illustrate and celebrate an eight-decade period during which some of the greatest jazz musicians of African heritage appeared on film, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne, and many others. On loan from the Separate Cinema Archive, the exhibit is displayed in the JHC's Koret Heritage Lobby and inside the JHC's Media and Education Center.
Gallery Exhibit:African American Expressions of the Soul: Displayed in the JHC's Lush Life Gallery, this new group art exhibit features Bay Area African American artists Anna Edwards, Dray, Rhonel Roberts, Russell Kidd and James Gayles.
Lecture series: The Jazz & Democracy Project™: Taught by educator and writer, Dr. Wesley J. Watkins, IV, the Jazz and Democracy Project aims to not only preserve this national treasure by teaching us to appreciate the genius of jazz, but to inspire participants to become active, positive contributors to their community. Overview of the Jazz Heritage Center (JHC)
