JHC Announces Jazz on Film Screenings

Jazz on Film screenings will take place Jan. 16th-Feb. 25th on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30pm.



Screenings featuring the classic films illustrated in the Jazzin' Jammin' & Jivin' poster exhibit. Scheduled screenings are as follows (subject to change):



Tues. 1/26              Cabin in the Sky (1943) 98 minutes. Classic film

                                 featuring Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Louis

                                Armstrong


Thu. 1/28               Stormy Weather (1943) 78 minutes. An all-star cast including Lena Horne, the Nicholas Brothers, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Katherine Dunham.


Tues. 2/2                Hi De Ho (1947) 61 minutes. Featuring Cab Calloway. Also Jivin' in Be-Bop (1947) 59 minutes. Musicians include Dizzie Gillespie, Helen Humes, Milt Jackson, James Moody, Ray Brown


Thu. 2/4                 St. Louis Blues (1958) 105 minutes.  A fantastic  

                                cast featuring Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt, Cab

                               Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson


Tues. 2/9                A Man Called Adam (1966) 99 min. Sammy Davis Jr., Ossie Davis, Cicely Tyson, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Mel Torme, with Nat Adderley on trumpet


Thu. 2/11               'Round Midnight (1986) 133 minutes. Movie featuring Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Sandra Reaves-Phillips and a host of other excellent real-life jazz musicians. 8 Oscar nods confirms this as one of the best jazz-themed films ever made.


Tues. 2/16              Bird (1988) 161 minutes. Forrest Whitaker brilliantly portrays Charlie Parker, directed by Clint Eastwood. One of the quintessential films on a legendary, tragic life.


Remainder of Feb features screenings of selected films from the Hal Miller Jazz Icons film series:
