SAN FRANCISCO, CA – March 30, 2010: Independent filmmaker and Associate
Producer Michael Bedar, in conjunction with event co-producer Jay Randy Gordon
of Randy
Gordon Intergalactic, and the Jazz
Heritage Center, today announce the San
Francisco premiere of the documentary film Simply
Raw. The film engagement commences at 7:00pm in the JHC of San
Francisco (1330 Fillmore) and is being co-sponsored by the San Francisco
Medical Research Foundation. The event includes a post-film Question-And-Answer
session with the filmmaker.
Besides chronicling six
diabetics who switch from a standard American diet to a new way of eating raw
foods, ‘Simply Raw’ filmmakers show that the six subjects were medically-supervised
throughout their 30-day experiment. The documentary film includes commentary
from Doctor of Divinity, the Reverend Michael Bernard Beckwith, Actor and Activist
Woody Harrelson, Director/Filmmaker/Actor Morgan Spurlock (of 'Super Size Me'
movie fame), Peak Performance coach and renowned speaker Tony Robbins, and
Nutritionist-Author David Wolfe. In the film, esteemed teacher and
inspirational figure, The Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith raises his own experiences
and dealings with letting go his reliance on “white sugar, white flour, and
dead meat.” He speaks out on eliminating the emotional-psychological crutches during
the healing process of detoxification.
According to Jay Randy
Gordon: "Type 2 Diabetes appears to make up about 90% of all
Diabetes cases, and it has been on the rise to epidemic proportions. Childhood
obesity has clearly been a significant contributing factor to the daunting
disease. There is a reason that First Lady Michelle Obama recently won the Nick
Kids' Choice "Big Help Award," for her own "Let's Move"
campaign to cut down on childhood obesity. In the coming months, Nickelodeon
will be running PSA's to encourage kids to 'Stay Active' via its own
"Millions On The Move" campaign. Documentary films like ‘SIMPLY
RAW,’ from Michael Bedar, serve up why the Raw Food Movement is also a great
complement to not only deter obesity, but also to encourage a rounded, healthy
lifestyle."
According to
the American Diabetes Association, the
disease effects over 75 Million Americans (including 25 Million people with
Diabetes and over 50 Million people with Pre-Diabetes). Current projections place
U.S.
children, born after the Year 2000, as having a one in three rate of developing
diabetes in their lifetime. ‘Simply Raw’ filmmakers believe these numbers can
be reversed, and the documentary delivers the inspiring message through a
clear, profound, case-study-based story featuring the real participants. The
medical doctors who appear in the film show that lifestyle changes can significantly
reverse most cases of Type 2 Diabetes. By switching their diets and being
more active in the outdoors (the film was shot on-location in Arizona, as well
as the six hometown states of the participants), all of the Type 2 Diabetic
subjects in the film eliminated their medication under doctor supervision in
under thirty days during the making of the film.
Peter Fitzsimmons,
Executive Director of the famed establishment, the Jazz Heritage Center in San
Francisco, states: "Diabetes is clearly a killer in our community, and, by
showing the 'Simply Raw' film at the Jazz Heritage Center's Media and
Education Screening Room, we are in keeping with our mission to preserve our
heritage and to 'educate our community' about this particular medical
disease."
